How it works

Four steps, and the first one is the whole entry.

  1. Sign up for HOPE.

  2. Start any time between 9:00am to 12:00pm EDT.

  3. 10 questions, 30 minutes.

  4. Most solved wins. Time breaks the tie.

Ranked first on how many your child got right, then on how long they took to do it.

Divisions

Your child races their own grade band.

Each band sits a paper written for it, so a grade 2 student is never ranked against a grade 5 one.

  • Grades 2 & 3

  • Grades 4 & 5

  • Grades 6 & 7

  • Grades 8 & 9

  • Grades 10 to 12

Prizes

First place takes a gold medal.

A real medal, posted to them, plus a handful of fun prizes. Every division has its own winner, so there is a first place for every grade band, every month.

How to practise

Do math on HOPE. That is the whole training plan.

HOPE already serves problems at the edge of what your child can do, and the contest is written in the same spirit. Every session is practice.

Why we run it

Kids like competing. A math contest is one of the few things that makes a child want to do more math than anyone asked them for.

Want in? Sign up for HOPE.

An account is the entry and the practice. Nothing else to do.
